Adhesives can be used to bond metal, glass, wood, paper, fiber, rubber, plastic and other materials together to produce a function or performance greater than the sum of its part and the whole. Adhesive bonding method is increasingly replacing the mechanical coupling method, which is mainly due to the adhesive bonding method has the following advantages.

(1) Film, fiber and small particles and other materials with other methods are not good or difficult to link, with adhesive easily bonded together. Typical examples of such uses are: Polyethylene and other plastic film, aluminum foil, cotton fabric and paper laminated gluing; Glass wool insulator and wool glass fiber composite material; Grinding wheel, sandpaper, emery cloth and brake pads; Rayon, nylon, polyester and glass fiber reinforced tires; Corrugated boards, paper bags, labels, tapes, stamps and envelopes; Safety glass; non-woven fabrics and a flocked fabric or carpet made of cotton, wool or fine velvet, a particle board or particle board, a furniture trim panel or a polaroid board.

(2) Compared with the traditional weaving method, metal welding method and riveting, bolt or pinning and other mechanical connection method, the adhesive bonding method may be faster and more economical, this is often an important reason for using the bonding method.

(3) Can be different materials (such as: aluminum - paper, iron - copper, etc.) together. Moreover, when bonding two kinds of metal, the adhesive can be separated from them to prevent corrosion. When the thermal expansion coefficient of the two sticky objects is very different, the flexible adhesive can reduce the gravitational force caused by the temperature change. The properties of laminates of different materials are superior to those of any of the bonded materials.

(4) Stress is distributed in larger areas, can reduce the fatigue damage of the assembly, and may be lighter and stronger than the mechanical connection, such as aircraft wings or tail and body bonding.

(5) The strength-mass and dimensional stability of the anisotropic material is improved by cross-bonding. The non-homogeneous and water-sensitive wood can be transformed into warp-resistant, water-resistant plywood; The random fiber mesh can be made into an isotropic nonwoven fabric.

(6) In the capacitor, printed circuit and filling resistors, the glue can provide electrical insulation.

(7) Gluing can act as a moisture barrier, such as in packaging laminates, the glue line will greatly increase the moisture resistance.
