How to Choose a Water-Borne Adhesive for Hot Stamping Foil

A good hot stamping result depends on more than the foil itself. The adhesive layer affects transfer quality, edge definition, adhesion, drying, and storage stability.

When selecting a water-borne adhesive for hot stamping foil production, start with three points: the substrate, the coating process, and the stamping temperature.

Check the Substrate
Hot stamping foil may be used on paper, OPP, PET, PVC, leather, and other materials. These substrates do not have the same surface properties or heat resistance.
Before choosing an adhesive, confirm:

  • The final stamping substrate
  • Any surface treatment on the substrate
  • The required adhesion
  • The stamping temperature and pressure
A laboratory test is recommended because the same adhesive may perform differently on different foil and substrate combinations.

Consider Drying and Back Tack
On a continuous coating line, the adhesive must dry before the foil is rewound. If the coating is not fully dried, the roll may block during storage.
Drying performance is affected by coating weight, oven temperature, airflow, and line speed. The adhesive should also remain non-tacky after proper drying.

Confirm the Activation Temperature

A lower stamping temperature can be useful for thin films and delicate papers. It may help reduce shrinking, warping, or other heat-related damage.

The recommended range provides a starting point, but the final setting should be confirmed on the customer’s equipment. Pressure, contact time, production speed, and foil construction can all affect the result.
