Effect of wood substrate on coatings

Due to the chemical composition of the wood and the particularity of the wood fiber, if it is not handled properly, the water-based paint film will be damaged.
  • Wood is composed of cellulose and a small amount of gum, resin (rosin), pigment, tannin and the like. Although the amount of gum, resin, pigment, tannin, etc. is small, it has a large negative impact on the properties of the coating (mainly film forming and durability), it will affect the adhesion of the coating, if the upward osmosis It also affects the appearance of the film.
  • Wood fiber is hydrophilic, moisture absorption is easy to expand, and drying shrinkage is easy to cause cracking. Wood is prone to cracking and deformation during continuous moisture absorption and drying. Therefore, the wood should be dried before painting to control its water content to suit the local climate to avoid hygroscopic expansion in humid climates or dry shrinkage in dry climates. The moisture content of wood used as building materials or for outdoor use is controlled between 14% and 22%, and for furniture or indoor structures is controlled at around 12%.
  • If the wood topcoat is not hydrophobic, the water will penetrate into the coating film during the coating and use process. If it is light, the appearance of the decorative article will be black and white, and the heavy one will intensify the expansion deformation and mold of the wood fiber, rot.
  • In the process of wood coating, because the wood is a dense and uneven substrate,If the primer is poorly sealed, the solvent and the base material in the topcoat are not uniformly permeable, which may cause the gloss of the topcoat to be uneven and lose light, resulting in poor gloss stability.
  • For the floating color coating, because the penetration is not uniform, the drying rate of the coating film is different, which causes the color to appear uneven.
  • Cork primer glass vitrification is too high, the coating film is too hard and lacks deformation ability, and it is not suitable for the deformation of wood fiber, which will cause cracking and wrinkling of the topcoat.
  • Hard wood has a tight texture and is not prone to expansion and contraction, so coatings used on hardwoods do not necessarily require good flexibility.
