Single-Step Separation of PET Labels Recycled PET plastic bottles undergo a series of processes before becoming high-purity flakes ready for subsequent processing. Labels with various pressure-sensitive adhesives, in particular, can leave adhesive adhering to the PET flakes after removal, requiring high temperatures and detergents to partially remove. Flakes that cannot be removed must be discarded. In contrast, using washable pressure-sensitive adhesive for labels makes removal much easier. Generally, European countries use hot alkaline water at temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees Celsius and other reagents to remove pressure-sensitive adhesive from PET flakes. Labels made with BOPP facestock and washable pressure-sensitive adhesive automatically peel off PET bottle flakes after soaking in hot alkaline water for a period of time. The BOPP label facestock, due to its lower density, floats on the water surface, while the PET flakes, due to their higher density, sink to the bottom, thus separating the bottle cap, label, and flakes in a single step.
